Exceptionally Rare: Handwritten Letter from the Gaon Rabbi David Berlin, Av Beit Din of Ah"u

Very rare letter, entirely handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi David Berlin, av beit din of Ah"u. Signatures from dayanim in his beit din also appear in the margins of the letter. Altona, 1769. To the best of our knowledge, letters from him have never appeared at auction.

Unusual halachic letter combining a confirmation of divorce along with a recommendation to help the divorced woman and her small children. After the standard confirmation of divorce ... that she received a get from her husband according to Jewish law ... followed by a several-line addition from Rabbi Berlin, with his compassionate heart, in which he appeals to generous people to assist the divorcée "... who is alone and abandoned. It is a mitzvah to be concerned with her and her dependents, and to pray for her as well.

The letter was written and signed by the gaon Rabbi David Berlin, and the dayanim of Altona added their signatures as well, prominent sages themselves: the gaon Rabbi Leib Pappersha, author of Leshem Zevach and Rabbi Yosef Haan - one of the leading dayanim in the time of Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi David Berlin, Rabbi Leib Pappersha and Rabbi Yosef Haan.
