"Be Blessed with a Long Life": Wondrous Letter from the Admo"r of Skulen to the Author of Iggerot Moshe
Beautiful, important and interesting lengthy Chassidic letter [over 200 words] entirely handwritten by the first Admo"r of Skulen, the Rebbe Rabbi Eliezer Zusha Portugal. The letter discusses printing the sefarim of Skulen Chassidism, and bears magnificent blessings in its margins. Brooklyn, Wednesday, 13 Adar, "a time of the whole community" [1965], a date with astonishing significance!
The letter was sent, as mentioned, to the leader of the American exile, the Lithuanian gaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, author of Iggerot Moshe and it demonstrates that the gaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein was involved up to his neck in printing the sefarim of Skulen Chassidut (!) - Shem U'She'erit Yisrael by the Rebbe's father, and insights from the Rebbe himself on Tehillim (whether these have been printed is unknown). The Rebbe requests substantial amounts as an advance for printing the sefarim from the author of Iggerot Moshe in this letter [per earlier agreements between the two] and that the latter send letters to additional donors.
It is interesting to note that the sefer Shem U'She'erit Yisrael was only printed in 1971, and it seems according to this letter, written in 1965 (!), that printing this sefer took several years, and that Rabbi Moshe Feinstein assisted the Admo"r the entire time.
Blessings from the Skulener Rebbe were known to always be fulfilled, and he concludes his letter with a blessing for long life (and more) to the leader of American Jewry: "May [you] be blessed with long life ..." It's astonishing to note that the Iggerot Moshe did indeed live to an advanced age - for exactly another twenty years - to the day - after this letter was written, and he passed away at over ninety years old, which is considered quite a long life for his generation, on 13 Adar 1986 - exactly the date this letter was written!
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Admo"r Rabbi Eliezer Zusha Portugal.
