Letter from the Greatest Sage of the Generation, the Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Pruzaner, Author of Halichot Eliyahu
"He was renowned as the sharpest among the rabbis of his time" (the gaon Rabbi Moshe Meiselman)
Rare letter of blessings, written and signed by the
Chakima DiYehuda'i, the gaon Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi Feinstein,
av beit din of Pruzhana (in-law of the gaon Rabbi Chaim of Brisk). He was a
gadol hador but refused to serve as the rabbi of Jerusalem. Sent to Rabbi Yosef David Shachor,
av beit din of Antipoli and Semyatitche. 28 Elul, 1904, the year "יפקדם ה' לחיים טובים ביום הכסא הבעל"ט."
The letter was sent right before Rosh HaShanah 1904, a year before Rabbi Shachor passed away. From the letter it can be understood that he was already ill. This may be the reason Rabbi Eliyahu Pruzhaner went out of his way to give rare and tremendous blessings, writings of one of the yechidei segulah in the generation of Torah lions in which he lived, such as his in-law, Rabbi Chaim of Brisk, and his friend, the author of Ohr Somayach of Dvinsk.
The text of the letter reads: "May [you] be inscribed and sealed for good life and peace in the book of
tzaddikim gemurim, my dear friend, the famous and glorious gaon, full of Torah and pure reverence ... Rabbi Yosef David ...
av beit din of Semyatitche ..."
"I took a blessing and I will respond with a blessing. May [you] be blessed with a good year, full of Hashem's blessings, a year that all our heart's desires be fulfilled for the good, a year of redemption and salvation, a year of life and peace, a year of joy and blessing for [you] and [your] family, a year we hear of glad tidings of good salvations and consolations, a year that Hashem gathers our dispersed and distressed people and raises the banner of Torah and the Jewish people to place us in the ray of light. May [you] be inscribed and sealed in the book of complete tzaddikim, immediately, for good life and peace ... Your friend, who appreciates and honors you, seeking your well-being all your days, awaiting Hashem's kindness with a pure heart, Eliyahu HaLevi."
Supplement at the bottom: "I just now read your pleasant words, I was astonished to see that your honor is not in good health, I hope and pray with all my my might that Hashem sends [you] a complete recovery soon, a return as fast as possible to full strength, to merit serving Hashem in comfort, take my precious blessing, [your] friend who prays for you ..."
