Very Rare: Letters from the Gaon Rabbi Yoav Adler, Av Beit Din of Hantzevitch, and his Son, the Av Beit Din of Seredneye
Two important halachic responsa by the sacred gaon Rabbi Yoav Adler, av beit din of Hantzevitch and environs - one of the leading geonim and rashei yeshivah of the generation. Regards to the addressee from the son, the sacred gaon Rabbi Naftali Menachem Adler, av beit din of Seredneye, appear in the margins of both responsa. Hantzevitch, 1936. Letters from them are especially rare.
These letters were sent to their relative, the sacred gaon Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahane, later the Admo"r of Spinka in Jerusalem. Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahane served as an av beit din in Hungary those years. He appealed to the sacred gaon with two serious questions, the first regarding a Torah scroll burned in a synagogue - what the congregation should do, and what they should accept upon themselves due to this tragedy. The second responsum deals with a synagogue that people want to turn into a beit midrash.
These letters were written in the gaon Rabbi Yoav's later years, just a few years before both father and son lost their lives in the Holocaust. The form of the writing demonstrates that it was Rabbi Naftali Menachem who wrote both responsa in his father's name, and the gaon Rabbi Yoav signed his name in the margins of the responsa, together with two lines handwritten by him.
In his responsa, the gaon Rabbi Yoav Adler mentions the words of his teacher and primary rabbi, Rabbi Yehudah Greenwald, author of Shu"t Zichron Yehudah. The responsum was sent, as noted, to the gaon Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahane, grandson of Rabbi Nachman Kahane of Spinka, author of Orchot Chayim, and the writer also mentions words from the latter. The letter clearly demonstrates that Rabbi Yoav Adler and his son Rabbi Naftali Menachem were close relatives of Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahane of Spinka.
