Draft Leaves of Kehillot Ya'akov Handwritten by the Author, the Steipler. [Bnei Brak, C. 1940s]

Group of [5] leaves with Torah novellae on Talmudic tractates handwritten by the gadol hador, Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky, known as "The Steipler." These are drafts from his monumental work Kehillot Ya'akov on the Talmud. [Bnei Brak, c. 1940s.]

Each one of these leaves discusses a separate topic and stands as its own unit. The handwritten insights were later printed by the Steipler in his monumental series of sefarim, Kehillot Ya'akov al HaSha"s - each in the applicable tractate, five leaves for five different tractates:

  • Leaf no. [1]: Ketubot siman 17.
  • Leaf no. [2]: Temurah siman 3.
  • Leaf no. [3]: Pesachim siman 39.
  • Leaf no. [4]: Bava Metzia siman 24.
  • Leaf no. [5]: Nazir siman 2.

The content of these novellae was indeed printed in Kehillot Ya'akov, but entirely different versions from those written in these manuscripts, a golden opportunity for an unmitigated glimpse into the way the gaon of the Jewish people  wrote his chiddushei Torah and how he arranged them for print, what he chose to add and what to modify.

On leaf [5], we encounter an exciting and unfamiliar phenomenon - demonstrating the extent to which the Steipler was careful with the sanctity of the novellae he himself wrote. In the center of the page, there are several lines the Steipler decided to rewrite, but instead of crossing them out, in keeping with conventional practice, the Steipler "crosses them out" many times - but only between the words - with exceptional care so as not to eliminate even one letter of the chiddushim! (We will note that the Steipler did cross out single words in the manuscript, but apparently he preferred not to eradicate entire lines, due to the sanctity of the chiddushim.)

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Kanievsky.

[5] leaves of paper with an average size of 20 cm. Autograph script with revisions and glosses in the body of the manuscript, all handwritten by the Steipler.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Slight tear in a margin of one of the leaves, without lack.
