Erech Lechem, Constantinople, 1718. First Edition
Sefer Moharikash which is called Erech Lechem. Glosses on the Shulchan Aruch, by Rabbi Yaakov de Castro (Maharikash). Constantinople, 1718.
One of the earliest books of halacha written on the Shulchan Aruch. The author, Rabbi Yaakov de Castro [1525-1610] lived in Safed and Jerusalem and stayed in Rabbi Yosef Karo's house. He was later Rabbi of Egypt, and as is written on the title page: 'And his orders spread out through Egypt and its environs, and everything was done at his command'. Even in the following generation, all the sages of Egypt relied on his rulings and responsa. The glosses in the book before us match the Rema's glosses in many places, a phenomenon which the Maharikash's grandson explains in the introduction to the book before us.
An uncommon book.
On pages 15 and 55 are early handwritten glosses.
[2], 131 leaves, 18 cm.
New binding with gilded embossing. Worming holes on some of the leaves with minimal damage to text.
Moderate-fine condition.
