Machanyaim - story by Micha Yosef Berdyczewski, published by Tushia, Warsaw, 1899. First edition. Author's inscription on title page.
Micha Yosef Berdyczewski [1865-1921] was a Hebrew author and philosopher, who created new fronteirs in Jewish religious literature, and was a reformer to anything and everything related to religion and the history of the Jewish nation. Machanyaim was one of his most prominent works. He wrote in Hebrew, Yiddish and German. Bialik described Berdyczewski's works as a "the center of the depths of the thoughts and feelings of this generation. With his works, he liberated all the flutterings of his soul and the turbulence of his spirit." At the universities of Breslau, Berlin and Bern, he studied the thoughts of prominent German philosopers and was profoundly influenced by them. He regularly published articles in Hebrew newspapers and journals.
