Glosses by the Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin on Sefer Yuchsin

Sefer Yuchsin - history of the Jewish people by Rabbi Avraham Zakut, with glosses and additions by Rabbi Moshe Isserlis - the Ram"a. Early (third) edition. Amsterdam, 1717. Pocket edition. Pedigree copy.

Personal copy that belonged to Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, av beit din of Berlin, author of HaTzvi L'Tzaddik - one of the leading rabbis of Ashkenaz, whose glosses on Sha"s were printed in the volumes of Talmud from the Vilna edition onward. Aside from his Talmudic glosses, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin also wrote glosses on other sefarim, (Sefer HaChinuch and others) as well as this work,  Sefer Yuchsin.

The last leaf bears Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin's full signature twice: "The youth Tzvi Hirsch son of the great gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib ... son of Shaul,  av beit din of Gîlgău." Earlier signature displayed on the title page from the renowned dayan of Mannheim, the gaon Rabbi Elchanan Henly Furth ztz"l.

Many glosses appear along the length of the sefer [over 160 lines], handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin. The introduction to his book Tzva Rav (Machon Yerushalayim edition, 2002) remarks as follows with respect to these glosses: "His glosses on Sha"s were printed in the Vilna Talmud, and his glosses and comments on Sefer HaChinuch, HeAruch, Kaftor VaFerach, Sefer Yuchsin, Shu"t Chacham Tzvi,  Yad Malachi, and Lechem Shamayim by the Ya'avetz have all been printed." We will note that despite our best examination, we have not found where these were printed.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin [Levin] and Rabbi Elchanan Henly Furth-Dikelspiel."
