Extremely Lengthy Letter with Rare Blessings by the Minchat Elazar of Munkacs to the Rabbi of the Land of Israel

"May [you] yet flourish in [your] advanced age, active and invigorated ... to accomplish much ... continuing to illuminate as you have until now"

Lengthy and very beautiful letter by the sacred Admo"r Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira, author of Minchat Elazar of Munkacs, one of the leading Admo"rim of pre-Holocaust Europe. Sent to the gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, av beit din of the Ashkenazic communities of Jerusalem. Munkacs, 1929.

The letter was written by Rabbi Moshe Goldstein and the Rebbe added the last four lines and signed it in his handwriting.

The Minchat Elazar opens his letter with an impressive line of titles expressing his deep appreciation for the keeper of the embers in the Land of Israel: "To the dear honorable rabbi, the famous gaon, the lofty tzaddik, right pillar and mighty hammer, renowned in Judea and Yisrael with his great name, glory of the elders accomplished pillar of the banner of his people - sacred, honorable and glorious is his name, our teacher, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, shlit"a ..."

The body of his letter discusses support for the widow of the Chassid R' Yitzchak Eichenstein and the young orphans. The Admo"r, who was known for his big heart, wrote that he is sending 350 crowns from his own pocket in addition to the kollel support. This is a very significant sum. The support was sent in the form of checks. However, because the Admo"r did not know the widow's address, he requests that the gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim send the checks "Please forgive me for this trouble ... and merit is brought about through the meritorious ..."

At the end of the letter, the Admo"r blesses the leader of the Chareidi community in the Land of Israel with wonderful blessings "May [you] yet flourish in [your] advanced age, active and invigorated with Torah and Divine service, to accomplish much good, continuing to illuminate as you have until now. [Your] dear friend, with love and respect for the precious Torah, multiple blessings that we merit seeing the face of Mashiach Tzidkeinu speedily in our days. Signed with great strength and love, Chaim Elazar Shapira."
