Rare Collection: Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg's Utensils for the Seder Night and Passover

Dined on sparkling matzahs on Passover

Rare, unique collection of the ritual items that belonged to the wondrous elder rosh yeshivah, the gaon Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, rosh yeshivah of Torah Ore and one of the rabbinic leaders of recent generations. He used them on the most sacred night of the year. Including his Seder plate!

* Seder plate, with a compartment for the (square) matzahs, made of high-quality fabric with fringes at the sides, topped with a color print of the word "Pesach" and the simanim of the plate.

* Beautiful scepter for lighting candles for Shabbat and festivals (apparently silver).

* Antique copper plate, large, colorful and especially beautiful, with a relief of a David's citadel, used by the rabbi during Passover.

* Matching small platter (set), with a cover bearing a relief of Jerusalem, used by Rabbi Scheinberg on Passover.

* Decorative letter opener, with which Rabbi Scheinberg would open the thousands of letters that streamed to his home.

The segulah power of objects used by tzaddikim has been known in Jewish tradition for thousands of years, already from the time of the Talmud. The Yerushalmi Talmud, in Tractate Nedarim, relates that the wisdom of one of the sages increased beyond that of his associates. They asked him how he achieved this level of wisdom. He replied: "Rabbi Meir's staff was in my hands and it taught me wisdom" (Yerushalmi Nedarim 29b). That is, the very fact that he held a tzaddik's object in his hand made him that much wiser. The Chata”m Sofer wrote in his sefer regarding the garments of tzaddikim: “The Yerushalmi indicates that a person’s clothing draws from its wearer’s sanctity, and one who wears it after him will draw to him that same spirit for the good or otherwise; this is the secret by which sons wear their father’s clothes” (Chatam Sofer al HaTorah Parashat Toldot).
