Shulchan Aruch that Belonged to Two Lithuanian Rabbinic Authorities. Vilna, 1870. Dozens of Glosses

Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, Part I. With Be'er Heitev, Pitchei Teshuvah and Nachalat Tzvi. Vilna, 1870. Copy that belonged to two rabbis in succession among the leaders of Lithuania who signed their names on it [three times]. Dozens of important glosses along the length of this Shulchan Aruch.

On the flyleaf and the top of the title page, there are two owner's signatures by the gaon Rabbi Moshe Ya'akov Rabinowitz, av beit din of Maishigola and maggid meisharim of the Vilna community. Another owner's signature appears after the introduction, that of Rabbi Elimelech Wilner, av beit din of Tokmak.

As is known, Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah is a rabbi's most basic tool, even in our days, and all the more so in earlier generations when each and every person slaughtered, kashered and salted their own meat, and they had to turn to their rabbis for every question. This Shulchan Aruch that belonged, as mentioned, to two rabbinic leaders in Lithuania, is adorned along its entire length with many important glosses, some lengthy, that reveal astonishingly broad expertise in the sefarim by Achronim (in the era before search engines and electronic databases). The glosses are on the halachahs of: Ritual slaughter, treifahs, blood, fish, meat and milk, forbidden mixtures and also the laws of idol worship and interest.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi Moshe Ya'akov Rabinowitz and the gaon Rabbi Elimelech b"r Yissachar Ber Milner.
