Haggadah that Belonged to the Gaon Rabbi Elazar Lipschutz, Son-in-Law of the Elder Admo"r of Alexander

Passover Haggadah with the 'Simchat HaRegel" commentary by the Chid"a. Pietrkov, 1909 - personal copy of the dayan and moreh tzeddek of Lodz, the gaon Rabbi Elazar Lipschutz, one of Poland's select individuals and son-in-law of the first Admo"r of Alexander, Rabbi Yechiel Danziger.

His pencilled signature appears at the top of the title page: "Elazar Lipschutz" and there are four stamps reading: "Elazar Lipschutz- Alexander." The gaon Rabbi Elazar Lipschutz of Alexander was the son-in-law of the elder Rebbe of Alexander, Rabbi Yechiel Danziger, and brother-in-law of the Yismach Moshe and the Tiferet Shmuel. He is considered one of Poland's select individuals, as is evident from the fact that the leading Admo"r of Poland chose him from among thousands of his followers as a bridegroom for his daughter, Sheva. He served as a dayan and moreh tzeddek in Lodz.

The abandoned dispute between the Chassidim of Gur and the Chassidim of Alexander as to which was the largest Chassidut in Poland - whether it was Warsaw-area-based Gur, or whether it was Alexander, based in the Jewish industrial city of Lodz, has not been determined to this day. In any case, there is no doubt that the gaon Rabbi Elazar Lipschutz sat with this haggadah at the seder table of his father-in-law, the great Saraf of Alexander - one of the most prominent Admori"m of all generations, whose wondrous Passover seders were longingly recounted by Chassidim for many years after his passing.
