Large rabbinical archive including the halachic correspondence of Rabbi Gurewitz of Australia with rabbis throughout the world, including signatures, divorces, certificates, and more. Europe, Australia, and Tel Aviv, 1914-1950s.
Hundreds of documents including official papers, signatures, certificates, and more, in various sizes.
Rabbi Yosef Lipman Gurewitz (d. 1957) became rabbi of Melbourne, Australia, at the beginning of the 1930s. In his role in this remote country, he was in touch with rabbis and rebbetzins throughout the world, as expressed through these documents which include expansive rabbinical correspondence throughout the world, beginning in the 1930s through his death in the 1950s.
Collection includes:
* Dozens of original certificates from the Realshul Talmud Torah in Hamburg in the 1920s; German birth certificate dated 1914.
* Rabbi Gurewitz was heavily involved in divorce proceedings, testimony regarding weddings, and those who refused to give a get. Included is a collection of letters related to these issues from throughout the world, including: Va'ad HaRabbanim shel Kollel Warsaw and Prague, 1929; Bialystock Rabbinate, 1933; many letters from the Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem rabbinate from the 1930s-50s; rabbinical letters from Bari, Italy, from the 1940s; large collection of original get documents; marriage certificate signed by Rabbi Zilberman, rabbi of Safed and the settlements, 1931.
* Rabbinical letters related to the argument regarding Australian meat and the kashrut of the meat, including letters and personal correspondence between the rabbis and original telegrams regarding the discussion, Tel Aviv, London, and Australia, 1938.
* Letters signed by the Rosh Yeshivah of Mir, Rabbi Eliezer Yehudah Finkel, 1934.
*Rabbinical letter and posters from the "Va'ad Geder Olam, " Chevra Kadisha in Vilna, 1935, headed by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski.
* Personal correspondence with Rabbi Herzog, some with his signature.
* Donation letter from Yeshivat Chafetz Chaim of Radin in Vilna, 1940.
