Sharp Letter from Rabbi Herzog from the Beginning of his Service as Chief Rabbi of Israel.
Sharp rabbinic letter in which Rabbi Herzog warns the religious council not to issue any proclamation in the name of the chief rabbinate without his consent. Jerusalem, 1938.
Rabbi Herzog, who after his ascent to the position of chief rabbi of the Land of Israel, was worried about disputants in the Land (refer to his letter to Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky, Winner's catalog 128, in which he writes: "I knew, my friend, I knew, that my way would not be paved with roses.") In this letter, he uses sharp language so that the paskevil-printers in Jerusalem would known that there is someone new in charge, so they not try anything "clever" with him: "I warn you that from this day forward, there is to be no proclamation written in the name of the chief rabbinate without my knowledge and consent." He signs this letter with classic English political correctness (he had previously served as chief rabbi of Ireland): With great respect and loyal friendship, Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog."
Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog [1888-1959] was the Ashkenazic chief rabbi of the Land of Israel from 1936 until his passing. He had previously served as chief rabbi of Ireland. His son was President Chaim Weizmann.
