Sod Hashem and a Mohel's Ledger. Holland, Early 19th Century
Sod Hashem. Laws and service of circumcision, by Rabbi David Lida with the rulings of the Mahari Weil and others, and with remedies in Yiddish. Amsterdam, 1745. With a mohel's handwritten ledger.
Specifications: 30 leaves, followed by [4] leaves with the names of those circumcised.
Unique Features: The Mohel's name is embossed on the binding: Uri son of Lipman Rentz, 1801. On the last pages, he recorded by hand the names of the babies he circumcised. He begins: My heart is astir with good, I desire to do Your will, so I said I have come with a scroll of a book written about me, these are the names of the children of Israel who have entered under the wings of the Divine Presence, through me, through the commandment of circumcision and periah ... the first baby was circumcised on 22 Sivan 5560 [June 15, 1800] and the last one in 1816. At first he circumcised in Amsterdam and later in Harderwijk in central Holland. Another location is also mentioned. A total of 35 circumcised babies.
Condition: Fine. Many aging stains. Original special binding.
