Tur Yoreh Deah, Copy that Belonged to the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Freund of Hunyad

Tur Yoreh Deah, Part II. Vilna, 1900. Copy that belonged to the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Freund of Hunyad, father of the ga'ava'd of Edah HaChareidit, the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Yitzchak Aryeh Freund.

Owner's signature at the top of the title page, in his hand (in pencil): "Yisrael Freund." Inscription on the flyleaf indicating that the book belonged to the rabbi of Hunyad, and several official 'Kvitung' (-receipt) stamps as rabbi of Hunyad.

The gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Yisrael Freund was a son of the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Freund, the Admo"r of Năsăud. Rabbi Yisrael was a disciple of the author of Kedushat Yom Tov of Sighet and son-in-law of Rabbi Ze'ev Goldberger, rabbi of Hunyad. Rabbi Yisrael served as a rabbi of Brodna after his father, and in Hunyad after his father-in-law. He vehemently refused to serve as an Admo"r, and was one of the most prominent Chassidim of the Admo"r Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar. His son was the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund, ga'ava"d of Jerusalem, who also refused to serve in an official capacity as an Admo"r. However, he did conduct tisches and receive kvittlach from his many followers, as one of the Admo"rim.
