Nishmat Chaim. Handwritten Scholarly Glosses. Discovery in the Binding.

Nishmat Chaim, composition on the Sma"g. Responsa, sermons and compilations by Rabbi Chaim b"r David Abulafiah. Salonika, 1806. Multiple and lengthy glosses from the time of the printing, in Oriental script.

Along the entire length of the book (primarily in the first part, including responsa and a composition on the Sma"g), there are multiple and lengthy scholarly comments from the time of printing, in Oriental script. Most of the glosses open with the words: 'Shmuel said' and they are lengthy glosses. Leaf 71 bears a signed gloss in a different script.

The cover of this book was detached, and underneath, it was revealed that the back flyleaf (that remained attached to the book) is made of a leaf from the renowned book of responsa,  Chikrei Lev (Yoreh Deah III) by the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Rephael Chazzan. It turns out that this leaf is a galley proof from the book with about twenty glosses and corrections that were indeed corrected in the printed edition; apparently the corrections are in the author's handwriting.

The author Rabbi Chaim Abulafiah [III] wrote a very large composition on the Sma"g, but most of it was burned in the fire that occurred in Izmir in 1772, and what was saved was printed here.

The Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Yosef Rephael Chazzan [known as HaYare"ach or HaChaka"l, 1741-1820] was one of the rabbinic leaders of Izmir, Chevron and Jerusalem, and he served as Rishon LeTziyon when he ascended to the Land of Israel. His son was the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Chaim David Chazzan and his grandson was Rabbi Chaim Palagi of Izmir. His book Chikrei Lev (from which a galley sheet is presented here) is considered one of the most important and renowned books of responsa.
