Anthology of Responsa from the Leading Sages of Morocco [Rabbis of the Attar, Birdugo, Toledano Families and Others] Morocco, 1740s


Anthology of halachic and practical responsa from the leading chachamim of Morocco, the sages of Meknes, Fez, Salé, Tétouan, Rabat and Gibraltar. Some are autographs.


The anthology includes:


1) Autograph. Complete halachic responsum handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Maimon Birdugo, one of the leading sages of Meknes, author of Shu"t Lev Meivin. He was known for his good name, as HaRav HaMeivi"n. (Malki Rabanan 81a.)

Signed on the responsum are: Rabbi Ya'akov Birdugo (1787-1843), author of Shufraya D'Ya'akov and more, "and he was famous throughout the cities of the West for his wisdom and sanctity" (Malki Rabanan 70a relates a tale of wonder about him) as well as a signature by Rabbi Shmuel Toledano, Ra'ava"d of Meknes, grandfather of Rabbi Raphael Baruch Toledano. He signed on many halachic rulings and responsa by the chachamim of Meknes (refer to Shu"t Lev Meivin, Shufraya D'Ya'akov and others.)


2) Autograph. Additional handwritten responsum from Rabbi Maimon Birdugo with signatures from his brother Rabbi Mordechai Birdugo (Malki Rabanan 87b, at the bottom) and signatures of Rabbi Shmuel Toledano and Rabbi Shmuel ben Malka, with handwritten half-page additions by Rabbi Ya'akov Birdugo and his signature.


3) Responsum from Rabbi Shmuel Vaish (1738-1818), who was pious and accomplished, and wonders were seen upon his passing (Malki Rabanan 121b). With additional words from Rabbi Baruch Toledano of Meknes (1738-1817) - see more about him ibid. 24b. And rabbis of Fez - Rabbi Yehudah ben Attar (II), Rabbi Chaim David Seriro and Rabbi Shmuel ibn Zimra (see more about them in Malki Rabanan 50a).


4) Autograph. Responsa from 1809 and 1821 from Rabbi Yosef Elmaliach, Av Beit Din of Salé, Rabat and Gibraltar (d. 1823), author of Shu"t Takfo shel Yosef (Malki Rabanan 60a), some of which are autographs.


5) Responsum from Rabbi Shlomo Toledano (d. 1789) of the sages of Meknes, from 1786 (Malki Rabanan 116b).


6) Responsum from the sages of Tétouan from 1820 by Rabbi Menachem Nahon (Malki Rabanan 84a). Rabbi Moshe HaLevi (ibid., 89a) and Rabbi Vidal Yisrael (ibid, 29a).


7) Responsum from the sages of Rabat from 1826 from Rabbi Avraham Elimaliach, Rabbi Yitzchak ... and Rabbi Ya'akov Bibas Masali (Malki Rabanan 67a).


8) Lengthy responsum signed by Rabbi Moshe HaLevi, one of the dayanim of Tétouan (as mentioned above in no. 6)).


[70] pp, of which approximately [54] pp are written, 15x20 cm. Also including two unsigned responsa and several leaves of Torah novellae on Tractate Megillah and more.


Fine condition: Aging stains. Worming perforations with some damage to text.
