Talmud Bavli with glosses of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich of Simleu.
Eight volumes, 40 cm. On Tractate Pesachim 32b his signature, "H.K Shlomo Ehrenreich, " is on a sticker to reinforce a tear.
Throughout the tractates are dozens of comments in his handwriting. On the flyleaf of tractate Rosh Hashana is a summary of a ruling that he ruled "in the case between the plaintiff R' Yosef... and between R' Shmuel... I ruled that R' Yosef is obligated to pay... 1939."
On the endpages are Torah novellae and various inscriptions. On several volumes, endpages from a previous volume have been attached, and on them are interesting inscriptions.  On the flyleaf of tractate Bava Kama is the stamp of his son Rabbi Yehoshua Ehrenreich.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich (1863-1944), was the well-known rabbi of Simleu and one of the greatest rabbis of Hungary/Transylvania before the Holocaust. He served as the rabbi of Tshaba, and later as the rabbi of Simleu for 40 years until he was murdered in the Holocaust in May 1944. He established a yeshiva for choice students and wrote many books, including the four-volume responsa Lechem Shlomo. Some of his writings were lost in the Holocaust.
When the law was passed in Poland requiring that animals be stunned before their slaughter and the Jewish leaders gathered together to think of a solution to the decree, the Chafetz Chaim said that the question must be sent to "the tremendous genius" of Simleu (who was not present at the gathering), as he was capable of properly examining the matter.
Luxurious semi-leather cover. Stains, tears, reinforcements and detached pages. Some of the glosses are faded and smudged. Moderate to fine condition.
