The Merchant of Venice - is a play by William Shakespeare written at an unknown date between 1594 and 1597. The play shows the shark-paying Jew Shylock, who signs Antonio, the merchant from Venice, on a letter of guarantee that if he does not pay his debt on time, he will be forced to pay the debt with a liter of meat. The sum is used by Antonio's young friend, Sagnio, on his quest for the beautiful and richest heiress Porcia.

Shylock's character has been widely and widely interpreted. On the one hand, it represents the anti-Semitic stereotype, straight from the darkness of the Middle Ages, of the miserly, money-bearing Jew, and on the other hand it is a human figure whose suffering, pain and demand for revenge are presented with understanding.
