Rosh Yosef, responsa regarding “Choshen Mishpat” by Rabbi Yosef Ishkapa.
Rabbi Yosef Ishkapa (1570-1662)) was a prominent Izmir rabbi. The author of Knesset HaGedolah quotes his rulings, and the Chekrei Lev (Choshen Mishpat siman 2) wrote: Moreinu HaRav HaGadol…Yosef Ishkapa z"l….whose waters we drink in all aspects of life in the city.”
His many disciples included Shabbtai Zvi, who Rabbi Ishkapa was one of the first to excommunicate when he started publicizing his messianism.
This work written by a rabbi from Izmir, Turkey was printed in Frankfurt, Germany, since there was no press operating in Izmir or Constantinople at that time.
