Gaon of Vilna. Peirush HaGra on a few aggadot and Sefer Yonah. First edition. Vilna, [1800]
Published by the sons of the Gra.
Commentary on a few aggadot of the Talmud by the Gra. Additional title page: Sefer Yonah with Peirush Rashi and Beiur HaGra.
The work was published by the sons of the Gra:
“Published by his sons…the great, famous rabbis...”
This was the first publication of Torah of the Gra that was printed from his own manuscript and that was printed by his sons. (
Shenot Eliyahu, which also appears in this catalog, was published by their brother-in-law, Rabbi Moshe of Pinsk, and wasn’t from the Gra’s manuscript.)
The book opens with the approbation of the two batei din in Vilna and the introduction of the great rabbis, the sons of the Gra.
The printed announcement from the Vilna beit din regarding the printing of the works of the Gra appears on the back of the title page to Peirush Yonah:
“
People who did not sufficiently study and took upon themselves the glory of deciding halachah in the name of the Raban of Bnei HaGolah, the great Gaon and chassid…. who do not fully understand his words and they decided to write what they heard and to print it."
Vilna 1800. First edition.
