Siddur in Ashkenazic Rite with Prayers for the Whole Year. Sulzbach, 1712

Printed entirely on parchment!

Beautiful siddur with prayers for the whole year in Ashkenazic rite. This copy was printed entirely on parchment with large letters, initials and decorative titles.

Sefarim printed entirely on parchment are exceedingly valuable and rare finds. Parchment is highly challenging as a printing medium, and even centuries ago, the material was exorbitantly priced. Parchments books were thus usually custom-ordered as exhibits or delivered as gifts to dignitaries or wealthy patrons. Parchment printing in the early 18th century was highly fashionable, but still very scarce. Today, it is rare to discover Jewish books printed entirely on parchment.

The siddur presents in a single thick volume and encompasses prayers for the entire year, as well as Tikkunei Shabbos L’HaArizal with Zemiros Ha’Ar”i; the Haggadah; and other additions (see below for full contents.)
The title page verso boasts the famous mizmor “Lamnatzeach” with the words shaping a menorah.

The siddur is incomplete. It is missing about 100 pages at its conclusion (225-326) and another seven leaves  (21-22, 24-28) . Most of the text from missing leaves (21-22, 24-28) was manually restored in the early 19th century in block letters with nekudos upon 7 leaves of parchment. Leaf 37 has a minor tear with negligible damage to the text. Leaf 38 and 41 have small tears, without loss of text

Sulzbach, 1712. Rabbi Aharon ben Rabbi Uri Lipman Frankel Press. 66 [1] 67-224 of 326 leaves. 19 cm. Leaf [1] between leaves 66-67, includes the piyyut ‘Yigdal’, which was added only into several copies. Used. Several pages with marginal tears or very narrow margins. The title page is encased in a decorative border that is partially rubbed out.
Bound in ornate new leather binding with leather strap and metal clasp.
