Rovigo Mikvah Polemic
Mikveh Yisrael. Venice [1607]
Mikveh Yisrael – anthology of responsa by Italian sages that invalidated the Rovigo mikvah, arranged by Rabbi Yehudah Saltro of Fano.
Polemic: At the very start of the 1600s, an intense dispute broke out amongst the Italian sages regarding the status of the mikvah in Rovigo that drew water through a bucket with holes. Many rabbis permitted the mikvah, while others prohibited its use. The dispute spread until the Italian sages were divided into two distinct camps, those who permitted and those who prohibited it.
This work was published by those who invalidated the mikvah and counters the halachic ascertains of those who permit it. In particular, this work opposes the Mashbit Milchamot (that appeared in the previous Tzefunot catalog). Leaf 85a includes a list of 35 rabbis that invalidated the use of this mikvah.
