The Holy City - Two Illustrated Volumes - 1849
The Holy City, Historical, Topographical, and Antiquarian Notice of Jerusalem. by: George Williams.
John W. Parker, London, 1849.
Two volumes, written by George Williams (1814-1878), an Anglican priest and teacher at Cambridge, who belonged to the entourage of the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem. The book was written in an attempt to refute the conclusions of Edward Robinson and Eli Smith's research in Jerusalem on identifying biblical sites. Includes 16 lithographs depicting landscapes and sites in Jerusalem (one of the lithographs - a bird's eye view of Jerusalem - printed on a large folding board with a linen back), a map of Jerusalem (double board, part hand-painted), the interior plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and more. Some small illustrations inside the text. Gilded illustration of a Menorah on the cover.
English, 660 + 618 pages, good condition: apart from the folding map with tears in the folds and tape repairs on the back. 23X15 cm.
