בספר אישי זה, הפוליטיקאי שמעון פרס ז"ל, חתן פרס נובל לשלום, מתאר מסע דמיוני בישראל עם בן לוויתו תיאודור הרצל, מייסד הציונות, שישראל כמדינה היתה עבורו אידיאל וחלום חייו.
עם שותפו לטיול הדמיוני, פרס מבקר באתרים שבהם ביקר הרצל עצמו ובודק עד כמה התחזית של הרצל הוכחה כנכונה. הוא אף משווה את רשמיו האישיים לאלו של הרצל, אבל גם מבקר בערים ונופים שהרצל לא היה יכול לדמיין זאת אז. המחבר עושה זאת בשפה משעשעת ומעביר לקורא פרק מההיסטוריה הישראלית ומסיים בהשקפה מעודדת לגבי עתידה של ישראל. כמה היא בת קיימא ומשמחת.
