Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a Jewish-Russian American artist, one of the most important and influential figures of the 20th century. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Pop Art movement and had a significant impact on the development of contemporary art and popular culture. Warhol was born in Pittsburgh and was interested in culture from a young age, particularly the lives of movie stars and other celebrities worldwide. In 1945, he began his studies at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he studied art and design. After completing his studies in 1949, he moved to New York to pursue a career in illustration and advertising.
In the early 1960s, Warhol developed his unique and innovative style based on mass-produced images and duplications of familiar consumer products and cultural icons. He saw art as a reflection of contemporary consumer culture and therefore incorporated techniques associated with mass production into his works, such as silk-screening, photography, and recording. His works became popular and established him as a leading figure in the Pop Art movement and a central figure in the international art scene. His importance and centrality to the art discourse of the time also stemmed from his social activities, which attracted artists, musicians, and cultural figures around him.
Two works for sale are included in Warhol's series "Ladies and Gentlemen, " created in 1975. This series was inspired by a period in which the homosexual and drag communities in the United States began to adopt their sexuality with great courage. From this "liberal" reality, Warhol created a series of 10 colorful portraits of black and Hispanic drag queens. The creation process of the portraits corresponds to the artist's well-known working method, as it is based on Polaroid images that undergo reprocessing. Warhol's artistic choices in the series, such as bold colors and composition, are rooted in consumer culture and communication but serve the essence of the "women on the margins of nightlife" and reinforce the sense of alienation that these women experience in reality.
