Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1744) the Ramchal, one of the greatest Kabbalists of all times. was born in Padova (Padua) to rabbi Yaakov Chai. There he was educated, studying Torah with his leading Rav Rabbi Yeshaya Bason. In 1722, Rabbi Yeshaya left Padova to Reggio and the Ramchal joined the group of learners Mevakshei Hashem, later becoming their Rav and leader. The Ramchal studied Kabbalah with a Maggid that was sent to him. When this was discovered, it caused much controversy and objection by the leading fighters against the Sabbatian Movement headed by Rabbi Moshe Hagiz. The Ramchal was forced to take an oath before the rabbis of Venice that he will not study Yichudim anymore nor write Seforim in the tongue of the Zohar, an oath he treated as halachically invalid (since he was forced to take it). The Ramchal wandered between varied cities (padova, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, among others) and eventually immigrated to the Holy land, where he passed away at a young age.
