- Letter by Rabbi Yitzchak Sofer to Rabbi Yaakov Lubavitch, Rosh of the special Beis Din for Takanas Agunos in Pest, about a Heter given to Leah the wife of Reb Shimon Polack. Tomshvar, 1948.
Background: in 1945, the central Beis Din for matters of Agunos was established in Budapest, by the initiative of the central office of the orthodox community headed by Rabbi Shmuel Kahn-Frankel. The rabbis of the Beis Din were some of the leading rabbis of She'eris HaPleta of the city, including Rabbi Yaakov Segal Leibowitz, Rabbi Yisroel Weltz, Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald of Chust, Rabbi Shimon Yisroel Posen, Rabbi Zvi Hacohen of Derchka and more. For a year and a half, the rabbis dedicated themselves to their activity at the Beis Din, saving from Igun two thousand and eight husbands and seven hundred Agunos. The Beis Din initiated an appeal for obtaining detailed evidence from Holocaust survivors who passed through the city and established a database of evidence for future Agunos. The process of obtaining evidence was also undertaken by county rabbis, village rabbis, Shochatim and Bodkim and private people who travelled widely to obtain the evidence. The central Beis Din continued to act in Budapest until 1950 alongside additional Batei Din for Agunos which operated in Hungary.
