Asta Bidspirit | Iconic Lucite Clam Shell Evening

Iconic Lucite Clam Shell Evening Bag by Will Hardy (Wilardy Elite Brand) – Circa 1950 - A rare and highly collectible evening bag, sculpturally and morphologically formed in the shape of a clam shell. The bag bears the designer's original and early signature, HARDY, stamped on its interior, directly attributing it to the early work of elite designer Will Hardy for the premier Lucite handbag brand Wilardy Originals. The bag is fashioned from a high-quality, thick, and lustrous casting of Lucite (a fine-grade acrylic), decorated with a stunning, deeply rendered faux-tortoise pattern in tones of honey, amber, and deep translucent brown, producing an exceptional interplay of light and visual depth. ✨ Design and Finish Characteristics: • Sculptural form: The front and rear panels of the bag are faithfully and symmetrically sculpted in the shape of raised clam shell ridges with serrated and rounded edges, executed to a high standard of artisanal finish. • Mechanism and closure: A mechanical spring clasp in quality brass at the upper center, connected to a long, stable rear metal hinge bar allowing wide, smooth, and secure opening. • Carry chain: A long, decorative carry strap — an elegant woven metal chain with a gold-tone finish — attached to the bag via original metal loops, enabling wear as a crossbody or shoulder bag. 📐 Dimensions and Physical Data: • Dimensions: 10 × 18 × 4 cm. • Net weight: 250 g. 📋 Condition Report: The bag is preserved in very good vintage condition given its age (approximately 75 years old). The Lucite retains high luster and rich color, entirely free of cracks, cloudiness, or ”plastic disease” (flaws characteristic of such materials over time). The mechanical clasp and hinge function in a tight, smooth, and fully operational manner. Collector's note for disclosure purposes: there is slight warping (bowing / minor expansion) on one side of the bag — a common, well-recognized, and fully accepted phenomenon in antique Lucite clam shell bags resulting from temperature changes over decades, which does not affect its display beauty or the functioning of the clasp (please refer to the accompanying photographs for full details).
