Large Mother-of-Pearl-Coated Nautilus Shell with Silver Repoussé Decoration — Tibet - A large nautilus shell coated with mother of pearl and decorated with silver repoussé (Repousse) work. Traditional Tibetan work, 20th century. A large natural nautilus shell that has undergone careful peeling and polishing to reveal its lustrous white-pearlescent layer. The shell is decorated with intricate handwork in silver employing repoussé and chasing (Repousse & Chasing) techniques, presenting traditional motifs of sinuous Chinese/Tibetan dragons, swirling clouds, and complex foliate designs. The upper section incorporates a floral decoration with a gemstone set in a reddish coral color. The rim of the opening is covered with a matching metal band bearing scrolling decoration. Such pieces are rooted in the tradition of the ”Dungkar”/”Shankha” — sacred ritual conch shells in Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, symbolizing fortune, purity, and the voice of the Dharma. They served as ritual wind instruments or prestigious protective and devotional objects. Dimensions: 12.5×11×9 cm. 273 g. In very good condition, light wear, primarily the patina of age.
