ROPiT. Antique PC Letter to Yeshayahu Broida. Belostok – Odessa- Jaffa, 1913, in Russian
Violet Cachet of ROPiT printed poorly.
The Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (Russian: Русское общество пароходства и торговли or ROPiT Russian: РОПиТ, also referred as Russian S.N.Co.) of Odessa was one of the biggest joint stock steamship companies in Imperial Russia. It was established in 1856 and ceased to exist in 1918 due to nationalization after the revolution in Russia.
Yeshayahu Broida immigrated to Israel in 1906 with his sister Chaya, later the wife of the writer Yosef Haim Brenner, and with his mother, from the city of Drozginik in Lithuania, when he was about 20 years old. The young Broida did not want to make a living from charity, according to his grandson, Gideon Broida. Therefore, he went to South Africa, where he studied accounting, while working in a store, where he also lived at night to save money. This is how Broida acquired not only an accountant's certificate but also British citizenship, and with it he also adopted an English image for himself in everything.
Broida's intention was to settle in Britain. He returned to Israel in 1912 for a short visit, but stayed in Israel due to an "exercise" by his sister Chaya: she introduced him to one of her friends, love blossomed and Isaiah stayed with his lover. His first job as an accountant was a year later, at the "Bezalel Factories" - the production arm of the art school under the management of Prof. Boris Shatz. Knetin, a Brit, was expelled from the country in Roida by the Ottomans during the First World War. After the British occupation, at the end of 1917, he returned from Egypt to Israel, and joined the Zionist administration as a financier and as a member of the liaison team with the British military government.
Together with the Dutch Jews Victor Van-Vriesland and the foreigner Babli - Dan Babli's father, with whose office the Broida Ministry merged decades later - Broida laid the foundations for the establishment of a sort of initial "Treasury Ministry", according to the British institutional format. The task was not easy, notes Gideon Broida, since in financial matters the settlement was in chaos, and the methods of distribution and lobbying still dominated. Van-Vriesland, Babli and Broida worked to raise the financial issue on the lines of an organized economic policy and the preparation of organized budgets. After several years, Broida opened his independent office. One of the first employees there was Yitzhak Shamir, later the Prime Minister of Israel. He says in his autobiographical book "The Summary of Things", that when he arrived in Israel he was looking for a job, and after working for a while in a building, he was accepted to work in an accountant's office, which had opened shortly before that in Jerusalem. "Accounting was not exactly the job I hoped to earn a living from in Israel, but I knew the secret of concentration and I learned quickly, " he wrote.
Broida's clients were major entities in those pre-state days, including the central bank, Wicho, Yafet Bank (owned by Ernest Yafet's father), kibbutzim and moshavim, Hadassah, the Mizrachi Bank (which remained a client of Broida's office until the sale of control to the Wertheim-Ofer group ), Teva, Dagon silos and more. Broida's clients were major entities in those pre-state days, including the Central Bank, Wicho, Bank Yafet (owned by Ernest Yafet's father), kibbutzim and moshavim, Hadassah, the Mizrachi Bank (which remains a client of Ministry Broida until the sale of control to the Wertheim-Ofer group), Teva, Dagon silos and more.
Due to Broida's extensive connections, he had a great influence on many business entities. His advice was required in solving problems or outlining economic and financial plans, and he was appointed to conduct special audits in institutions and organizations. For example: when a corruption case was discovered in the aliyah department in Warsaw, he was sent to Europe, and after a thorough investigation, he brought order to all the aliyah institutions in the capitals of Europe.
At the same time, Broida engaged in public activity. He was active in the establishment of the Kadisha Society of Jerusalem, in the establishment of the "Yeshuron" Synagogue in the capital, in the "Bnei Brith" global organization, in the establishment of the "Bnei Brith" children's institution in the Beit-Vagan neighborhood in Jerusalem, in the establishment of the Hasharon Hotel in Herzliya and more. Also, he was one of the founders of the Israel Chamber of Accountants
