Jeanne Coppel (painter/draughtsman; engineer; Jewish; Romanian; French; Female; (1896 – 1971)
Painter and collagist; born Jeanne Helder in Galatz, Romania, lived and worked
in Berlin 1912-15 where she had contact with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes;
returned to Romania 1916-19 when she first took up collage; came to
Paris in 1919 and studied at the Académie Ranson, married the Romanian
engineer Théodore Coppel in 1920; the family was forced to flee Paris
and seek refuge in Aix en Provence in 1942 due to his Jewish background;
living in hiding, she took up collage again, returned to Paris in 1946
and began to exhibit from 1948 with Galerie Colette Allendy and the
Realites Nouvelles group; her work was championed by the critic Michel
Seuphor, who compared her collages to Braque and she became associated
with the Paris postwar generation of Tachiste painters, including
Camille Bryen and Felix del Marle.
