'Kissing Doves' - Silver Kinetic Sculpture by the Artist Menashe Kadishman (1932-2015). Hallmarked
Menashe Kadishman was born in Tel Aviv in 1932 and was raised there.
His father, Ben-Zion Kadishman, designed linoleum cuts in the 1940s inspired by the pioneers and Zionism.. After his father's death in 1950, Menashe left school to help support the family. At the same time, he began studying sculpture with Moshe Sternschuss at the Avni Institute. Between 1950 and 1953, he served in the Nachal Brigade, stationed in Ma'ayan Baruch and later in Kibbutz Kfar Yizra'el, where he worked as a shepherd. After his discharge from the IDF, he worked as a copper miner in Sodom. In 1955, he left the kibbutz due to issues related to integrating his art into kibbutz life and worked on archaeological excavations in Chazor. In 1957, he lived in Jerusalem in the area of Emek HaMatzleva and worked on mosaic restorations as part of the Antiquities Authority. In 1959, he traveled to London, England, where he studied art with artists such as Anthony Caro and Reg Butler. In 1972, he returned to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
Menashe Kadishman began his artistic career as a sculptor. His first works, were figurative sculptures. In the late 1950s, he began creating sculptures that were closer in spirit to the abstraction of the New Horizons group and were even influenced by the Canaanite approach. These works, made of bronze and stone, depicted figures in an archaic style or abstract structures that referred to altars. Between 1964 and 1970, he worked on building abstract and minimalist geometric structures, which referred to themes such as balance or sculptural mass and incorporated glass. In the 1970s, his art began to address new media such as land art. With these, he explored the relationship between society, nature, and art. In 1978, for example, he presented the "Sheep Project: Nature as Art and Art as Nature" at the Venice Biennale. During the 1980s, he began working on the myth of the "Binding of Isaac, " creating many paintings and sculptures around it.
Among his famous works are the sculptures "Tension" (1966), "Ascension" (1973), "The Binding of Isaac" (1982-1985), "Fall" (2001), and the series of sheep paintings.
Menashe Kadishman passed away in May 2015.
