Novellae of Hungarian Torah Leaders.

This manuscript is a treasure trove of explanations on Sugyot of Shat and novellae from The Kol Aryeh, and The Machane Chaim, Rabbi Chaim Sofer, leading disciples of the Chatam Sofer. The author also notes down lectures from his teacher, The Goren David and the Pnei Yitzchak of Kleinwarden.

This manuscript was penned by Rabbi Chaim Klein, cherished disciple of The Kol Aryeh.

As was common in those days, Rabbi Chaim Klein’s transcriptions are replete with spelling mistakes. He even writes at one point: “Even though I cannot write well…” Upon seeing this, The Kol Aryeh took his quill and penned a most rare approbation for his loyal disciple, encouraging him to continues his holy mission transcribing Torah novellae in order that they should not be lost forever.

The Kol Aryeh writes in his approbation: “I will also give my endorsement that you are unable to write well, nonetheless if you do not wish to write if it is not written well, they will be lost".

The family of The Kol Aryeh saw this most uncharacteristic move as almost prophetic. Indeed, pogroms during the Holocaust decimated the Klein Family’s property and fortune. It was purely miraculous that this manuscript survived the inferno.

Half of this  manuscript was published 25 years ago by the Klein Family. However, to date the second half has never been printed.

There are 2 leaves within this book that according to the family’s testimony are penned in the Kol Aryeh’s very own saintly handwriting. It seems that when necessary, the Kol Aryeh completed his student’s writings.

On leaf 1 is an index on the order of contents of the manuscript.

The manuscript was printed up to Leaf 25. From there onwards, the rest of the manuscript was never published. In addition, some novellae from the first 25 leaves were never published (list to be sent to buyer). The printed section of the manuscripts amounts to approx. 130 pages. About an equal amount is unprinted. The purchaser will also be able to print the published section of the manuscript.

It is a great merit to discover the novellae within this manuscript, which received the Kol Aryeh’s approbation. The Shevet HaLevi writes in his endorsement. “And merit is achieved by the meritorious to bring nachat ruach to the righteous…”

32, 42 [2] total 45 leaves (90 pages). The Shevet HaLevi’s original approbation with his handwriting and signature is appended to the manuscript. Until leaf 32 two columns are written on each page (4 columns per leaf). Good condition. Stains. Simple binding, reinforced with tape on the binding.
