Rare and Valuable Item: The First Chumash Printed in Yiddish. Cremona [1560]. Impressive Copy in Original Binding.
The Hebrew press in Cremona served as a center for study and Jewish printing for just over twenty years, within the challenging censorship of the Inquisition.

Before us is an exceptionally rare volume that has not appeared in public sales and is not among the found copies.

The 'Cremona Chumash' is the first Chumash translated and printed in the Yiddish language, first printed in the city of Cremona in Italy in 1560. This Chumash is a milestone in the history of Hebrew printing.

The Chumash includes Rashi's commentary, Haftarot, and the Five Megillot, printed in Hebrew letters in the Yiddish language at the printing house of Vincent Conti. The copy before us is bound in an original leather cover with original gold ornaments. Some pages show water stains. Owner's signatures on the title page and the last page of the book.

Cremona [1560]. Vincent Conti.
[2] , 156 leaves. Complete. A nice copy with original binding.

The first Yiddish-printed Chumash - an exquisite copy in its original binding - never before offered at public auction.
