Item Overview
Description:
Masa Melech. Magnificent Copy With Signatures. Salonika, 1601. First Edition. Rare.
A unique composition dealing with the laws of taxes and levies.
Authored by Rabbi
Yosef Ibn Ezra.
In that era, the ruling authorities would levy taxes on Jewish communities. The community laymen
would divide the tax among community members as they saw fit. They would often collect the
monies themselves and transfer it to the authorities.
This book is the first composition that focuses solely on this topic and is a cornerstone reference for
Halachic rulings on these laws.
It is an exceedingly rare volume. Indeed, many Torah giants lamented that they did not have access to it.
On the title page and the following page appears a beautiful, curly signature of Rabbi Yitzchak
Cuenca, son of Rabbi Ben-Zion Cuenca, Sephardic Av Beit Din in Jerusalem. Similarly, the signature
of founder and editor of HaMe’asef appears. In addition, the signature of philanthropist, Daniel
Sayad appears on the title page.
Rabbi Yosef son of Yitzchak Ibn Ezra (deceased 1601) was a disciple of the MaHashdam. He was one
of Turkey’s leading sages and served as Rabbi in Salonika, Constantinople, Larissa and Sofia in
Bulgaria. Rabbi Yosef is famed for his book, Atzmot Yosef on Masechet Kiddushin.
