Item Overview
Description:
Rare Autobiographical Letter, Penned in Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef’s Saintly Handwriting. 1968. Unique and rare historical letter.
Unusually unique ‘resume’ letter, by Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef, Chief Rabbi of Israel, prior to his appointment as co-Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv alongside Rabbi Goren.
In a beautiful and clear script, Rabbi Ovadiah chronicles his details and positions he held up to Adar, 5728, close to the date of his appointment as co-Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv.
The letter is written on Maran’s personal stationery, while he served on the Jerusalem Bet Din HaGadol.
Maran Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef (1920-2013) was a leading Sephardi Rabbi and Halachic Authority. Born in Bagdad, Rabbi Ovadiah was named Ovadiah for Rabbi Addullah Somech and his grandfather. The name Yosef was after Rabbi Yosef Chaim, The Ben Ish Chai. Only in later years did Rabbi Ovadiah adopt his second personal name as his family name, which his descendants carry till today.
Rabbi Ovadiah served as vice-Chief Rabbi of Egypt and later as the Rishon Letzion, the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel. He was the spiritual leader and president of Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah of the political party of Shas. Rabbi Ovadiah was considered to be the leading Sephardi Rabbi of his generation and the ultimate Halachic Authority. Under his leadership, Israel’s Sephardic communities grew and blossomed. His funeral was the largest in the annals of the State of Israel’s history, with about a half a million people participating.
Unique and rare historical, autobiographical item of a leading Sephardi Rabbi, Maran Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef.
