Italian Silver Oil lamp in the Renaissance style. Florence Italy 20th Century.
A lovely neoclassical style silver lamp.

Lamps of this type became popular again around the mid-18th and early 19th centuries. The neoclassical taste led to the production of figural oil lamps such as this one, where the oil reservoirs are supported by animal figures or faces. Lamps of this type were produced mainly in Rome and the Papal States, and a limited quantity was produced in Naples, Milan, Genoa, Venice and Florence. The production of silver oil lamps ceased in the late 19th century when more efficient lighting sources became available. The body of the lamp, which holds the lighting oil, is placed atop a long rod, and is supported by a large, rounded base. Along the sides of the lamp are silver chains that hold tools for handling the lighting of the wicks.

This type of oil lamp has been displayed in museums as an item that was sometimes used by Jews.

50 cm height. Weight: 1015 grams. Marked.
*The lamp was fitted with an electrical cord during the second half of the 20th C
