Tanach, Second Volume, Nevi’im Acharonim and Ketuvim. Philadelphia, 1814. The First Hebrew Tanach Printed in the United States.
This is the second volume, (Nevi’im Acharonim and Ketuvim) from the book of Tanach.
This Tanach was published in two volumes, without punctuation. With a foreword in Latin by Evarardo Van Der Hooght, and Latin glosses on the page margins. The text is based on the Everardo Van Der Hooght edition, printed in Amstedam. (On the title pages of Nevi’im Rishonim and Nevi’im Acharonim is printed: “Proofread very carefully in Amsterdam.” Goldman points out that some copies have this note erased from it.)
In 1812, Jonathan Horwitz suggested printing a Hebrew version of Tanach, using the letters that he had brought from Amsterdam to America. He rapidly discovered that he was not the only one with this printing goal. Due to the ensuing competition, Horwitz sold the letters for typesetting and the printing license to Thomas Dobson and William Fry. Ultimately, they were the ones to publish this edition.
