A Rare and Significant Pair of Filigree Torah Finials. Galicia [Poland/Ukraine], ca. 1810.
A museum-quality piece of Jewish ritual art.

The custom of adorning the Torah scroll with finials originated and developed from the shape of the Atzei Chayyim on which they were mounted. Because these finials often terminated in a spherical bulb that resembles the shape of a fruit, they were called 'tapuchim' (apples) in the Spanish diaspora, and 'rimmonim' (pomegranates) in all other communities.

It is interesting to note that the Rambam already mentions the custom of rimmonim in his Hilchot Sefer Torah (10:4): "Silver and gold rimmonim and the like that are used to decorate the Sefer Torah - they are sacred objects, and it is forbidden to use them for profane purposes".

The form of the present rimmonim exemplifies a special type created in Poland and the Ukraine (Galicia) which are known as 'Atzei Chayyim' due to the similarity of their shape to that of the Torah staves themselves.

This pair is especially rare thanks to its exquisite and dense filigree work, which was hand executed by a very fine silversmith.

A museum-quality piece of Jewish ritual art.
