Sefer Kol Bo. With The Stamp of the Sephardi Beit Midrash of Harlem. Venice, 1567.
Sefer Kol Bo, authored by one of the leading Rishonim, is an early Halachic book, printed anonymously.
The book includes approx. 150 sections dealing with blessings, prayers, customs of Shabbat and Holidays, marriage, monetary matters, food halachot and mourning customs. The book also includes one of the earliest elucidations on the Passover Haggadah.
The final two pages feature a fascinating stamp: “Sephardi Beit Midrash (of Harlem) Newark. Founded in 1906”.
Jewish Harlem was a ghetto-style Jewish neighborhood in Manhattan, that existed from the end of the 19th Century until the end of the 1920’s. This was the second most populated neighborhood in New York. At its peak it housed more than 170 000 people; with more Jews than in Lodz, London or Berlin at that time. Famous figures of the neighborhood included Harry Houdini, the Marcus Brothers, Arthur Miller, Yossele Rosenblatt, Henrietta Szold and George Gershwin.
The Mystery of the Author of Sefer Kol Bo:
The author’s identity is unknown although various suggestions to his identity have arisen over the years. The book, Shalshelet HaKabbalah posits that the author is Rabbi Yitzchak bar Sheshet. Indeed, the Chida also agrees with this suggestion. Others name Rabbi Ahron HaKohen of Lunel as the author. Some claim this is an abridged version of ‘Orchot Chaim’ authored by a different figure, or possibly by Rabbi Ahron himself. The book, Koreh HaDorot quotes the claim that some believe a very wise woman authored the book. Today the accepted premise is that the book is an early edition of the book ‘Orchot Chaim’ by Rabbi Ahron HaKohen.
