Talmud Bavli – Tractate Kritut. Daniel Bomberg Printers. First Edition. Venice 1522.

Between the years 1520-1524, Bomberg printed the entire Talmud Bavli. This edition was the first edition to encompass the entire Talmud, as only some volumes had been previously printed by Family Soncino. This edition set the template for the page format of the printed Talmud as we know it today. This format places the Talmud in the center of the page, with the Rashi commentary placed on the inner section of the page. Tosafot’s commentary appears on the outer section of the page. Similarly, the pagination of this edition set the precedent for the majority of subsequent editions, and numbered page references are according to this edition’s pagination.

Tractate Kritut is the seventh tractate of Seder Kodshim, both in the Mishna and Talmud Bavli.

In his introduction to the Mishna, the Rambam explains this tractate’s seemingly surprising placement in Seder Kodshim. Tractate Kritut details all sins punishable by Karet, when committed wilfully. They are however, liable for a Chatat sacrifice when performed unintentionally, hence this tractate’s placement in the part of Talmud pertaining to sacrifices.
