Spice Container of Rebbe Moshe Zerach Eidlitz from Prague. Johan Christian Girschner (1738-1772), Augsburg, Germany.

A unique silver spice container from the 18th century, crafted by a known German goldsmith from Augsburg, in the second half of the 18th century. The spice contianer belonged to Rabbi Moshe Zerach Eidlitz from Prague, a student of Rabbi Yonathan Eibeschitz.

Rabbi Moshe Zerach Eidlitz, was a rabbi, dayan and preacher, Rosh Yeshiva in Prague, author of the books 'Or LeYesharim' and 'Malekhet Machshevet'. He served as a Maggid in Prague, and lived during the time of the Nodeh BiYehudah, who even used to come to hear his drashot. Rabbi Moshe Zerach, whose father died when he was a child, lived and grew up in the home of Rabbi Yonatan Eibeschitz, from whom he learned Torah.

The spice box was handmade by the German goldsmith Johan Christian Girschner, who worked in Augsburg, Germany between the years 1738-1772. The underside of the box carries his silvermark, as well as the city mark of Augsburg with the year 1795.
This special container is in the form of a box standing on four small decorative legs, with a sliding lid. The inside of the box is divided into four rectangular compartments to hold the spices. A cast silver pomegranate with a stem and leaves is set upon the lid, to be used as a handle for sliding it open and closed.
