“The Annunciation”. Carved, gilded and polychromed relief with coloured silver. Burgos. 16th century.
The Virgin Mary has a sweet expression and is wearing fine clothes. She is at prayer, kneeling, and delicately resting on a prie-dieu as she turns her head towards the angel. Between the figures is a vase of Madonna lilies, proclaiming Mary’s chastity.
The mastery of the sculpting of the delicate folds of the clothes, hands and faces is outstanding. The coloured silver and red-toned polychrome background gives depth to the delicious scene formed by the sculptural group. 59 x 43 x 6 cm.
