This catalogue mentions that there are two sketches of the work (notebook 71, 1873) in the Casa Museo Pinazo in Godella and a study of the jug made in the same year.

About the work, it is stated: "The portrait of a Ciociara" also dates from 1874. One of the largest canvases I know of from his first trip to Italy. The composition of the Roman peasant woman standing in front of a fountain with a metal jug on her head suffers from a certain rigidity, but it is part of the painter's deep interest in capturing popular types [...] there were photographs and postcards of Ciociaras that could serve as inspiration or models. Pinazo began to conceive this portrait in various drawings or sketches in which he depicts her in different poses, without a jug and with a jug, in front of the fountain or even in more intimate settings or chores, such as the drawings showing her sewing.
