German anti-Semitic Judaica Friedrich Ludwig Jahn cast iron tallion c. 1870s-80s

Sold for: $180

German anti-Semitic Judaica Friedrich Ludwig Jahn cast iron tallion c. 1870s-80s
Germany: Friedrich Ludwig Jahn anti-Semitic cast iron tallion, c. 1870s-1880's; not maker-marked; 36x36mm, 16.5g. Obverse: right facing Jahn & legend " Wer Jahn ehrt * Des Juden wehrt" ("Where Jahn is honored, the Jews protect themselves"). Reverse: "Turner Cross" ("Turnerkreuz") device surrounded by oakleaves wrapped by 3 ribbons on each side with various dates. Jahn's worldview incorporated anti-foreigner/anti-Semitic sentiment and though considered an outspoken anti-Semite, he left no influence on other movements. Though many tallions commemorate Jahn few incorporate anti-Semitic content - hence this piece is unusual.
