Judaica prayerbook Sidur Siftei Tzadikim Form of Prayers vol1, Isaac Leeser 1864
Judaica-Americana prayerbook Sidur 'Siftei Tzadikim' (language of the righteous) / The Form of Prayers According to the Custom of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews: Volume First - Daily Prayers, 4th edition; edited by Isaac Leeser (Yitzhak ben Uri Eliezer); stereotyped by Slote & Mooney, Philadelphia, 5624 (1864); 10 page preface + 278 pages. The burgundy & gold cover is original, leather-bound board with tooled design, imprinted title on spine and owners name on front, worn around the edges but intact; the inside pages are all intact, flat and pristine with gold edges; the inside covers are dirty probably as a result of poor maintenance; there is a light split between the inside cover and the rest of the book. The prayerbook is bilingual, with the English text on the left-handed pages, and the Hebrew on the right. Leeser (1806-1868) was a German-born American, Ashkenazi-Jewish religious leader, teacher, scholar and publisher who helped found the Jewish press in America, produced the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English, helped organize various social and educational organizations and is regarded as one of the most important Orthodox leaders of his era (he was not an ordained Rabbi); a founder of the American 'Modern Orthodox' Jewish movement.
