Joint mourning notice for the death of Rabbi Shimon Shkop and the Admor of Sokolov Rabbi Yitzchak Zelig Morgenstern, Jerusalem [1939]

"a heavy mourning for Israel to be cut off from meuri israel, Gaon Hador, the elder of the heads of the yeshivas, the high priest from his brother, Rabbi Shimon Yehudah Hacohen, and the great Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Zelig Morgenstern. A notice of mourning on behalf of the Hebron Yeshiva in their death. Merkaz Press, Jerusalem.

The rumor of the demise of two of Israel's ma'aris soon arrived in Israel somewhat late. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the Admor of Sokolov went to live in the resort town of Otwock near Warsaw, and in 1939 the Germans entered and began to abuse the Jews. On the same day of the year, his eldest son, who served as a rabbi in Vongrove, was murdered in Warsaw after being abused by the Germans in the city square. His father Rabbi Yitzchak Zelig passed away on the 3rd of Cheshvan 1939.

After the outbreak of the Second World War, Rabbi Shimon Shkop remained at the Sha'ar HaTorah yeshiva in Grodno after most of the students fled to Vilna. On 9 Cheshvan 1939, the Gaon was able to speak to an assembly of rabbis who had gathered at his home for advice on matters of education. When he was 80 years old during the seven days of mourning for the Admor of Sokolov who passed away on the 3rd of Cheshvan 1939. The rumor of the demise of the Maori of the generation arrived in Israel and was in fact a double mourning for the passing away of the two leading leaders of ultra-Orthodox Judaism.
