Haim Goldberg (1917-2004) - A Jew carrying buckets of water

Chaim Goldberg (1917-2004), a Jew carrying buckets of water, oil on canvas, signed.

Goldberg, a native of Kazimir (Poland), one of the greatest painters of the Jewish town and ghetto. Immigrated to Israel from Poland in 1955. His works focused on one and only one issue: the figures of the pre-Holocaust Jewish town. On one occasion, Goldberg was asked why he did not paint other subjects: "I can only paint my people", he said. In 1946 he returned to Poland and performed works on copper plating on the subject of the Holocaust. The Polish government allocated him a training scholarship in Paris for a year, and his works have been exhibited in many exhibitions and even commissioned by government institutions including the National Museum in Warsaw. After arriving in Israel, he said: "I am not interested in money, nor property, I only want to paint" he added, "and I also want an exhibition".Despite the opposition of the Painters' Association, which criticized his paintings, claiming "there is no need for paintings about the exile here ...", he insisted on painting the subject close to his heart, and over the years gained unprecedented Israeli and international recognition for his works. (See an article about him that was published in the newspaper Ma'ariv on June 2, 1965).
